What is a Summer Intern?

The Intern Program is part of Camp Daniel’s Summer Staff Team. This is an opportunity for participants to build their leadership skills. They also play a fundamental role in the operational workings of the summer sessions. Interns help plan the training sessions for counselors and the activities that campers participate in during a week of camp. During camp, Interns help run these programs and will be overall good role models and leaders that promote unity and spiritual, relational and recreational growth among counselors, campers, workers and staff. This program will be used to equip participants with the skills needed to be effective leaders, with a focus on discovering and implementing their unique strengths as leaders.

Summer Intern

“There's always that one summer that changes you!”

Dear Family and Friends,

I’m writing to tell you about an opportunity that I have this summer at a place called Camp Daniel! It’s a place that has gained a very special place in my heart and has had a big impact on both my life and my relationship with God. I’ve been a counselor for the past four years and this summer I’ve been asked, yet again, to join their Summer Internship Program.  By participating in this program, I will grow in my leadership skills and learn about the cross-cultural ministry that takes place at camp. Camp Daniel is a summer camp in Northeastern Wisconsin for children and adults with disabilities. Campers come to grow personally, socially, and spiritually while participating in group rec games and activities. As the campers grow, so do the counselors and workers. From my personal experience at camp, my life has been changed. My eyes have been opened to a love I never knew existed. Each year, my faith grows stronger and when I am there, I feel closest to God. The community at camp is unlike any other, you are welcomed with open arms and treated like family. I’m so very thankful that Camp Daniel has become a part of my life.

Over the past four years, Camp Daniel has been the most important part of my summer and has made a positive impact on shaping who I am today. Being at camp is where I feel, not only myself, but everyone can feel the presence of God. One time in particular really stands out to me. On the day all the campers arrived during the 5thweek of camp last summer, I was blessed with getting to co-counsel with my sister, Elyse. Our camper was wheelchair bound and I’ve never experienced that before so I was quite nervous. As soon as we got her all settled in I asked her what she wanted to do first. She looked around and saw a swing. So guess what she wanted to do? Swing. We set her on the swing and held her tight while we pushed her back and forth. She couldn’t stop smiling and giggling. I asked “what’s so funny?” She says, “I haven’t been able to go on a swing for… for as long as I can remember!” and continues to laugh. Another counselor came over to snap a picture (the second picture in the photo gallery on the top of this page) and said, “This is a beautiful moment.” Thinking to myself about this moment makes me realize how powerful Camp Daniel is. Camp Daniel puts emphasis on the word ability in disability.

Being involved in Camp Daniel’s Summer Internship Program is a missions trip and to make it all possible I will need your support both emotionally and financially. I ask that you keep me in your prayers as I embrace what God will be doing in my life. The total cost of the program is $800, which includes food, housing, training, and transportation. I will need to raise this full amount by June 20th. A financial donation of any size will go a long way and is greatly appreciated. If you are writing a check, please make it out to Camp Daniel with my name, Erin Schmitting, written in the memo. You can also make an online donation by clicking on the “Donate to Erin Button” under my picture. Since Camp Daniel is a non-profit organization, all donations are tax deductible. Once a donation is made, you will receive a receipt in the mail. Enclosed in this envelope is a donation slip to help make the donation process as simple as can be. Thank you for all for your love and support! I really appreciate it and I can’t wait to be a part of this years Camp Daniel Summer Internship Program.

With Love From, Erin Schmitting
